U.S. Army soldiers are screened generally every six months to make sure they meet the body fat standards. Soldiers are weighed, and commanders use a weight-for-height or BMI) table to determine if a soldier meets the standard. For example, for men, the maximum weight-for-height requirements convert to a body mass index (BMI) rating of 25 (considered overweight by National Institutes of Health). BMI is calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in centimeters squared). This measurement does not make sense for everyone so in 2013 the Army changed a weight requirement to body fat standards. They did this to account for soldiers who are heavier than allowed by Army weight tables, but who have lower levels of body fat.
