CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting®: which one is right for you and how they can work together for even more amazing results

Body Contouring is the new big thing in the nonsurgical aesthetic world. At Omni Centers we strive to find the best results with the least amount of downtime and Allergan is proving, again, to be the leader in fat reduction and enhancing muscle tone. The two big technologies for body contouring are CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting®. It’s easy to get these two confused since they are produced by the same company and both have “Cool” in the name, however the technologies are different and target different body benefits. So how do you determine if CoolTone™ or CoolSculpting® is right for you to achieve your desired results? Or for some, can it be possible to take advantage of both technologies to achieve those desired results? The answer is yes! Omni Centers is here to help you not only understand the difference between CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting® but also determine the best course of action to help you reach your optimal body sculpting outcome.

What Is The Difference Between CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting®?

While there are a number of differences, the major difference between CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting® is that CoolSculpting targets and reduces the fat cells in your body while CoolTone targets and tones the muscle cells in your body. It is important to understand that CoolTone™ doesn’t use a freezing/cold for targeting your muscles, but “Cool” is in the name because Allergan, manufacturer of both the CoolSculpting and the CoolTone, wanted to maintain brand continuity. So it may be that it is easier to remember Tone and Sculpt. If you’re having trouble separating one from the other think of it this way: Tone is to enhance your muscle mass and tone, and to sculpt is to remove fat to slim down the physique of your body.

How Does CoolSculpting® Work?

Coolsculpting is an FDA-approved medical device that has been proven to help reduce fat in problem areas and is one of the most effective non-surgical fat loss treatments on the market.

CoolSculpting® is designed to help permanently reduce the number of fat cells in a treatment area. The procedure uses a freezing method (fat cells are more sensitive than the surrounding cells in your body). The fat cells in the target area are frozen past the point that your body determines that it is worth the energy to repair them. This freezing of the fat cells prevents oxygen and blood flow from reaching the cells for an extended period of time. This effectively strangles off all nutrients from reaching the cells which in turn kills off the cells. While not all of the targeted cells will die, CoolSculpting has FDA clearance to remove 20-25% of the fat cells in the freeze zone per treatment and those frozen cells will eventually be processed and eliminated the body (usually over 3-6 months).

CoolSculpting® is designed to target stubborn fat pockets that are not eliminated with healthy diet and exercise. CoolSculpting has FDA approval to treat fat under the chin, the upper arms, abdomen, flanks, bra fat, banana roll (under the glutes), inner and outer thighs and above the knees.

It is important to understand that CoolSculpting is not a weight loss program and is generally not the best option if you are trying to remove a large amount of fat. CoolSculpting recommends that you be near your ideal weight, however, at Omni Centers we have found that depending on your individual goals (and making sure we set realistic expectations) it can be a great motivator for starting, maintaining or rewarding yourself during your weight reduction journey or for treatment of smaller areas (like under chin or bra fat).

After the procedure, it will take several months (usually people start seeing results and 6-8 weeks post procedure) to fully realize the final result. Most see a significant difference in 8-12 weeks but you can continue to see improvements for up to six months. For many areas, in order to obtain optimal results we recommend at least two sessions at a minimum of four weeks apart.

What Is CoolTone™ and how does it work?

Toning up the muscles on your body used to take months of hard work, and there was no real guarantee of success. Now there is a revolutionary new technology that can give your body a sculpted, toned look in just a few minutes and without any downtime!

This non-invasive procedure is called CoolTone and was recently given approval by the FDA as a medical device that can help people gain muscle tone. CoolTone™, unlike CoolSculpting®, does not use any kind of freezing at all, rather, it uses magnetic muscle stimulation (or MMS). Where CoolSculpting® targets the layer of fat cells over top of your muscles (subcutaneous fat), CoolTone™, on the other hand targets muscle cells. This technology sends quick bursts of electromagnetic energy into the muscles causing involuntary muscle contractions. It feels like a light, but non-painful, muscle spasm.

The body then starts to strengthen the muscles underneath the treatment area. Over time, the muscles will become firmer, stronger, and more toned. CoolTone is primarily intended for the improvement and strengthening of the abdominal muscles as well as toning of the thighs and buttocks.

CoolTone vs Emsculpt

Emsculpt is the major device competing with CoolTone and it was released in 2018. It was one of the very first muscle-building devices on the market. While it works similarly to CoolTone, the difference is that the latter has 50 percent more magnetic intensity (1.35 T versus 0.9 T) at the point of contact. It should also be noted that the clinical significance of the extra magnetic intensity has not yet established.

The Benefits Of Using CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting® Together

Because both CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting® target different kinds of tissue within your body it is possible to use the two services together in order to maximize your final result. For example, if you want to have a tighter-looking midsection you can use CoolSculpting® to freeze away some stubborn belly fat while also using CoolTone to tighten the abdominal muscles. In general, due to the depth at which the MMS of the CoolTone penetrates, we recommend CoolSculpting first if it is indicated. If you have questions, consult with the experts here at Omni Centers you will have a better understanding of which is right for you and whether you should consider one or both procedures in order to obtain the desired body contour.

Keep In Mind When Considering CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting®

The right body contouring device for you ultimately depends on what you’re looking to accomplish.

It is important to keep in mind some considerations with both CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting®. CoolTone is designed to help tighten and help tone target muscles.  However, it is recommended that you keep up with your CoolTone™ regimen quarterly, (at a minimum, there is no maximin number you are limited to) So 4 treatments per year to keep the results from the treatment (more to improve results from treatment). Just like doing crunches to tighten your abs, if you decide to stop performing your abdominal routine your abs will go away. So, you’ll want to either continue using CoolTone™ or adjust your workout routine accordingly. Also, CoolTone is not a method used for greatly enlarging your muscles. If you’re looking to increase the size of a given muscle you will need to work out that given muscle. When a muscle is worked out using heavy weights the fibers within the muscle will tear and break. The body will then begin to repair the damaged muscle fibers. With enough protein in the diet, the body will have excess muscle-building material, allowing it to build the muscles up larger. However, with CoolTone you are not directly tearing the muscle fibers. Instead, you’re simply working the fibers out, which in turn will help strengthen the fibers and tone the muscles without putting on bulk or size. If you’re interested in toning without increasing your muscle size, this is the perfect option for you.

CoolSculpting®, on the other hand, does permanently eliminate fat cells in the treatment area. However, CoolSculpting only addresses subcutaneous fat (on the outside of the muscle/pinchable fat) not visceral (under the muscle), this can only be addressed with diet and exercise. As mentioned above, CoolSculpting will not significantly change the number on the scale. For weight reduction you will still need to modify the underlying factors that are causing weight gain or preventing weight loss. Omni Centers can help with this too!

All body contouring procedures work best as an enhancement to good diet and exercise.
